I bought the first game knowing two things: Hideo Kojima made it, and Norman Reedus starred in it. That was enough to hand my money over.
I loved the graphics and the world building. But for most of that game I kept waiting for the gameplay to change into something more like Metal Gear Solid. It never happens. You're literally a post-apocalyptic UPS driver the entire time. Once I stopped waiting for it to be something else, I started to really enjoy it.
The sequel is more of the same, and that's fine. Sam has a few more tricks, there are new enemies, and a few more friends. I enjoyed it from beginning to end.
It gets so goofy at times that it takes you out of the moment for a second, but then you chuckle to yourself and keep going. I've learned to expect that from Kojima by now.
I enjoyed the first game's story, but I couldn't tell you I really understood it. With this one I had a much better grasp, even though things felt off the rails at times.
Overall I really enjoyed it. I'd hand my money over for another one without knowing much more than who's making it.
